About Berzeri

Berzeri (Kurdish: Berzerî, Arabic: برزري) is a Kurdish family — a babik (Kurmanji: Babik / Baivk / Tîre; Sorani: تیرە; Arabic: fakhdh / فخذ) of the Miran / Mîran tribe, also known as Kocher Miran. Miran is a well-known Kurdish nomadic tribal confederation.

The name Berzeri comes from Berê Zer in Kurdish: “yellow stones” or “yellow lands.” Among the Miran it was common for families and babiks (tîre) to be named after the geography of the place they usually resettled in the Zozan (summer highland pastures), rather than after a single ancestor alone.

The family’s main homeland is the Kocer region around Derik (Al-Malikiyah) in Rojava, northeast Syria. Part of the family also lives in several villages on the Iraqi side of the border.
